SAGE
Coalition has prioritized the issue of taxation of fellowships as part
of its agenda for the 2009-2010 year, and lobbied for this change
during its April 2010 Washington summit. As our White Paper on the
Taxation of Fellowships and Scholarships states, the current tax code
“places an unfair financial burden on graduate students, whose
fellowship packages do not take into account the net loss of taxable
income, and has a direct impact on the affordability of graduate
education.” H.R. 5078 is a bi-partisan effort that emerged from the
House Ways and Means Committee, and House Education and Labor Committee.
